Choosing the wrong career path may be the first mistake.<\/p>\n
Refusing to pivot because you’ve already invested so much time is the second.<\/p>\n
Trusting the wrong person may be the first mistake.<\/p>\n
Handing them more opportunities to hurt you because you’re trying to recover your losses is the second.<\/p>\n
What fascinates me is that the second mistake often costs far more than the first.<\/p>\n
Because the first mistake is usually made in ignorance, hope, youth, loneliness, fear, love, trust, or incomplete information.<\/p>\n
Most people are not trying to ruin their lives.<\/p>\n
They are simply making the best decision they can with what they know at the time.<\/p>\n
The second mistake is different.<\/p>\n
The second one is often made in resistance.<\/p>\n
Resistance to grief.<\/p>\n
Resistance to embarrassment.<\/p>\n
Resistance to accepting reality.<\/p>\n
People often act as though the mistake itself is the catastrophe.<\/p>\n
Sometimes it isn’t.<\/p>\n
Sometimes the catastrophe is becoming a willing accomplice afterwards.<\/p>\n
Not because people are foolish.<\/p>\n
But because humans hate loss.<\/p>\n
We hate admitting:<\/p>\n
“I was wrong.”<\/p>\n
We hate admitting:<\/p>\n
“I chose badly.”<\/p>\n
We hate admitting:<\/p>\n
“This isn’t working.”<\/p>\n
So instead of losing six months, we lose six years.<\/p>\n
Instead of losing one opportunity, we lose ten.<\/p>\n
Instead of accepting one heartbreak, we build a life around it.<\/p>\n
Most mistakes don’t destroy us.<\/p>\n
What destroys us is our determination to make the mistake worth it.<\/p>\n
We stay longer.<\/p>\n
Invest more.<\/p>\n
Excuse more.<\/p>\n
Hope harder.<\/p>\n
Not because the situation improved.<\/p>\n
But because we cannot bear the thought that the investment was wasted.<\/p>\n
So we keep feeding the very thing that is draining us.<\/p>\n
As if one more sacrifice will suddenly transform a bad decision into a good one.<\/p>\n
It rarely does.<\/p>\n
Some relationships end.<\/p>\n
Some dreams change.<\/p>\n
Some plans fail.<\/p>\n
Some people are not who we thought they were.<\/p>\n
And accepting that reality is painful.<\/p>\n
But pain and destruction are not the same thing.<\/p>\n
The truth is that some mistakes become expensive because we keep paying for them long after we’ve realised what they are.<\/p>\n
We call it loyalty.<\/p>\n
Patience.<\/p>\n
Commitment.<\/p>\n
Faith.<\/p>\n
Sometimes it is.<\/p>\n
And sometimes it is simply fear wearing a respectable outfit.<\/p>\n
Fear of starting over.<\/p>\n
Fear of looking foolish.<\/p>\n
Fear of admitting that all our effort led somewhere we never intended to go.<\/p>\n
But there comes a point when the lesson has already taught what it came to teach.<\/p>\n
The relationship has already shown you what it is.<\/p>\n
The friendship has already revealed its limits.<\/p>\n
The job has already demonstrated what it cannot become.<\/p>\n
The habit has already shown you where it leads.<\/p>\n
At some point, continuing to pay doesn’t create wisdom.<\/p>\n
It simply increases the invoice.<\/p>\n
Not every mistake can be undone.<\/p>\n
Not every loss can be recovered.<\/p>\n
Not every investment will pay off.<\/p>\n
But there is still a difference between making a mistake and dedicating your life to financing it.<\/p>\n
The first mistake may have been unavoidable.<\/p>\n
The second one is a choice.<\/p>\n
