The Things You Thought Would Wait

We have this quiet assumption that the moment we’re living in will still be there when we’re finally ready.

So we wait.

We chase.

We tell ourselves, “Later.”

Later, when I’m more healed.

Later, when I’m more confident.

Later, when I finally feel worthy of it.

Without realizing it, we freeze the moment in our minds. We imagine we’ll come back to it exactly as we left it—as though life agreed to stand still while we caught up.

But we forget something.

While we’re moving…

Life is moving too.

The people change.

The places change.

The opportunities change.

Even we change.

And one day, you return to something you quietly believed would still be waiting for you…

Only to discover that it kept moving without you.

It’s no longer there in the way you imagined.

Not because it was taken from you.

Not because you were forgotten.

But because time never stopped.

That realization can be heartbreaking.

Your mind fills with questions.

Maybe I waited too long.

Maybe I moved too quickly.

Maybe if I had known…

Maybe.

A thousand maybes.

But would you really have chosen differently?

Back then, you genuinely believed you weren’t ready.

You believed you weren’t enough yet.

You believed that one day, when you became a little wiser, a little stronger, a little more deserving… you would come back.

You weren’t trying to lose anything.

You were trying to become someone who could finally receive it.

And perhaps that’s the hardest grief of all.

Not losing something through carelessness…

But losing it while trying to grow into the person you thought you needed to be.

Still…

There is another truth worth holding onto.

If the past didn’t stay frozen waiting for you…

Neither will your future.

There are moments you haven’t met yet.

People you haven’t encountered yet.

Versions of yourself that don’t exist yet.

Not because they were waiting…

But because they’re still becoming.

So grieve what moved on.

Honor what you missed.

But don’t let yesterday convince you that life has finished offering you tomorrow.

Because perhaps the next beautiful thing isn’t waiting behind you.

Perhaps…

it’s quietly walking toward you.
